The Central Bureau of Secondary Education has issued a notification asking all affiliated schools to have a compulsory period on physical education and health on a daily basis for cIasses 1 to 8 beginning this academic year. Last year, the same was made compulsory for classes 9 to 12.

“The board has decided to implement Health and Physical Education (HPE) programme for Classes one to eight w.e.f. session 2019-20 onwards, with the aim of holistic development of the child, leading to a well-balanced in all walks of life,” an official notification by CBSE read.

“The revised and updated transactional strategies, detailed guidelines and methodology for administering HPE (Health and Physical Education) to students will be available on CBSE website shortly,” the circular added.

These courses will be of 100 marks. The board will also conduct practical examinations in order to assess students.

In the meantime, a report released on Friday said that the pass percentage of class 10 has fallen from 92.44 per cent in 2016-17 to 68.9 per cent in 2017-18 for government schools after reintroduction of CBSE board exams .

“Pass percentage of class 10 fell from 92.44 per cent in 2016-17 to 68.90 in 2017-18 for state government schools after CBSE board examination pattern was reintroduced,” it said.
