CBSE has introduced new subjects for the upcoming session starting from April 2019. Students can now choose among Artificial Intelligence, early childhood care education, and yoga as new subjects. These subjects can be taken as optional subjects by class nine students.

With the inclusion of AI, CBSE will be focusing on recognising the 'geo-strategic' importance of the subject. If schools want, they even have the liberty to start a module on AI learning for class eight students.

The CBSE circular says, "To enhance the multidisciplinary approach in teaching learning and also to sensitize the new generation, it was decided that School may start AI "Inspire module" of 12 hours at Class VIII itself."

From this academic session, yoga and early childhood care education will be introduced at Senior Secondary Level.

Other subjects

Class 10 students will now also have an opportunity to opt for a sixth Skill paper along with the existing five compulsory papers.

This exam will work as a replacement, for instance, if a student fails in any one of the compulsory subjects, such as science, mathematics and social science, then it can be replaced by the Skill subject.

All in all, the results will be computed based on the marks obtained in the best five subjects.

Also, the candidates have the freedom to reappear in a subject they have failed in.

Moreover, CBSE has advised schools to offer at least one Skill subject at Senior Secondary level.

Procedure of opting Skill subjects

  • Schools need to send the application to the board for these subjects
  • The last date to send the application for Skill subjects is March 31, 2019.
